As the name suggests, employee satisfaction measures how satisfied your employees are with the work culture around them and the tasks they work on. Working isn't just showing up at 9 am then leaving at 5 pm. A lot happens between these hours, and you can’t view the workplace as somewhere where employees come, work, and leave. Conducting an employee satisfaction survey is a great tool to understand how your employees feel about their work, and most importantly, how these feelings impact productivity and retention.

With regular employee satisfaction surveys, you’re able to measure your employee’s happiness and how they feel about the work they do. If they aren’t happy with their work, the productivity levels go down, and the morale is easily lost. Although it is unrealistic (and unnecessary) to analyze all workflows and motivations, using the right employee satisfaction survey questions can enable you to improve their well-being through insight. But remember to not throw surveys out the palm of your hand like it was a snowball fight - as this can become overwhelming and lead to form fatigue. One or two times a year is completely fine.

The fact that your company is organizing and conducting an employee survey sends a message to the employees that you care for them and that their opinions are valued. The survey also lets you gain insight into issues and places to improve within your different departments as an employer. It even allows you to manage them more effectively with the information you’ve gathered. However, keep in mind that you do these surveys for a reason, and you need to be fully committed to acting on your employee’s opinions and listening to them. Otherwise, they won’t bother answering future surveys and will likely view you as an employer who does not follow through on its promises. To avoid this, just be sure that you have the resources and time available to commit to change since after all, you want them to be as happy as you!

The main reason for conducting an employee satisfaction survey is to keep your employees happy and accordingly retain employees. When you have satisfied employees and a good work environment, you will notice fewer employees leaving your company for a better workplace, leading to higher retention and a more stable company culture. Having employees who stay longer and grow at your company enables them to gather more experience and knowledge. This tacit skill knowledge and intimate industry knowledge are advantageous for both parties. Lower turnover also keeps the costs of hiring and training new employees down. And when you do need to hire new talent, it will be easier since you managed to get a good reputation as a pleasant workplace. Plus you ensure the productivity remains constant by addressing the issues that arise, getting a grip on them, and then getting back to full productivity. 

When the employees have the opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions, you will identify exactly where the problem(s) lie within your company. It’s best to keep the survey anonymous since it provides a safe outlet for employees to bring up issues they may otherwise avoid due to fear of judgment or timidity. With the surveys, you bring a safe platform to the employees to voice these opinions, which encourages them to give honest and open feedback. With their input, you can build a workplace where employees are satisfied and, therefore, much happier, involved, and productive in their roles.
